St. Leonard's Place: Restoring York’s Grandest Crescent to its Original Splendour
St. Leonard’s Place is one of York’s most magnificent addresses.
Conceived in the 1830s as a crescent of palatial homes to rival those in London, it stands at the very heart of the city’s cultural quarter. Having spent years as offices, we saw the profound opportunity to fulfil its original promise. Our vision was to undertake a major restoration, to painstakingly return this iconic, Grade II* listed crescent to its intended residential use and re-establish it as a pinnacle of elegant city living
A Landmark Restoration
This was a project driven by a commitment to do things properly, transforming an entire crescent back into exceptional homes.
Re-creating Palatial Townhouses: We meticulously restored and re-created five palatial townhouses within the crescent, honouring the grand scale and elegant proportions of the original architecture.
Elegant Apartments & Mews: Alongside the townhouses, we created 29 beautiful apartments. We also established a new mews street to the rear, crafting a further six unique city homes.
A Curated Art Collection: To enrich the period environment, we thoughtfully assembled a unique collection of artwork for the communal areas, featuring highly regarded artists such as Mark Hearld, Anthony Gormley, and Sol LeWitt, adding another layer of personality and atmosphere.
Completed in 2017, the restoration of St. Leonard’s Place has returned one of York’s architectural jewels to the city.
This landmark project showcases our passion for and commitment to large-scale heritage regeneration, creating exceptional places to live while safeguarding the city’s history for generations to come.
