New York House: A Canvas for Creativity in Kirkgate

Situated in the heart of Kirkgate, home to some of Leeds’ most creative and independent companies, New York House is a key part of our wider vision for this historic neighbourhood.

Acquired by Rushbond in late 2016, we saw the building not just as an asset, but as an opportunity to contribute to the area’s unique character, complementing our investment programmes at the nearby Corn Exchange and First White Cloth Hall.

A Landmark Piece of Public Art

We believe in enhancing the public realm and supporting the city’s creative culture.

In partnership with Leeds BID and East Street Arts, New York House was chosen as a canvas for the innovative urban arts project, ‘A City Less Grey’.

The building is now adorned with the mural ‘Common Ground’ by artist Mike Winnard, a nationally recognised piece of public art that was completed in 2018.

The building itself is located on New York Street, next to the original I.J. Dewhirst Ltd. drapery suppliers building, which has historical ties to Marks & Spencer co-founders, Michael Marks and Tom Spencer.

New York House is now a landmark in its own right, a vibrant symbol of creativity within the Kirkgate neighbourhood.

This successful collaboration demonstrates our commitment to going beyond the conventional, using our buildings to create a lasting and positive impact on the city’s landscape.
