Martin Creed’s World-Class Artwork to Illuminate the Wood Street Collection

4 March 2025

A powerful message of optimism is set to light up Wakefield’s Civic Quarter. We are thrilled to announce that planning permission has been secured to install Martin Creed’s iconic neon sculpture, ‘EVERYTHING IS GOING TO BE ALRIGHT’, above the grand entrance of the city’s landmark former Crown Court.

This is a story of homecoming. Creed, a Turner Prize-winning artist of global renown, was born in Wakefield, a city already celebrated for its world-class sculpture. His work returning to its roots feels deeply fitting, strengthening the city’s creative identity while bringing new life to a cherished heritage building.

For three decades, the magnificent Grade II listed courthouse has stood silent. Now, it will not only be preserved but reimagined, becoming a canvas for an artwork that has brought hope to locations from New York’s Times Square to the Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art. As the glowing heart of our Wood Street Collection, the sculpture will offer a warm, creative welcome to the new residential community taking shape here—a place for a new generation to thrive.

This project weaves together local pride, heritage, and international artistry. Many of Creed’s neon pieces are skillfully manufactured right here in Wakefield by the brilliant Neon Workshops, a testament to the city’s rich creative fabric. We believe this inspiring work will shine a light on a confident new chapter for the courthouse, transforming it into a beacon of hope and a source of pride for the entire community for generations to come.
